Strada 105-106 Upper Street, Islington, London, N1 1QN
Yes, you read that correctly… S-T-R-A-D-A. I’ve already had some STRONG comments from one of London’s cutting edge chefs for tweeting about these guys last night. So I am definitely sticking my neck out on this one.
A marathon 10-bottle whisky tasting at Wax Jambu can make a man hungry. Unfortunately the food options on the northern end of Upper Street, Islington all looked rather bleak. After rejecting Papa John’s takeaway pizza and the aptly named Mexican venue Desperados we settled on Strada mainly because we happened to be standing outside their door. As they say, the most important factor is location, location, location
Surprisingly, the Tagliata Manzo (Toscana) I ordered was actually pretty good. Described on the menu as “Marinated and sliced grilled rump steak on a salad of rocket, green beans, baby spinach, tomato and Parmesan shavings with a rosemary & balsamic dressing” it definitely did the trick. I deliberately ordered it rare, fully expecting to receive ‘medium-to-well’. Happily, the slices arrived seared but nicely pink on the inside resting on a bed of fresh spinach and rocket leaves with the rest of the salad arranged above the steak. Good marks for presentation. The steak had good texture, gladly not oversalted (unliked my visit last year) and was a fairly good size for a main portion.
As someone who once enjoyed incredible steaks, thanks to monthly business trips to South Africa. It would be unfair to compare Strada’s effort to my best steaks. It’s not going to challenge Tramshed’s steak sandwhich, but from a place which I once swore I would never enter again, it’s pretty impressive.
