This ‘intricate’ chalkboard is advertising the movie “Ted” outside the Everyman Cinema in Islington

There are a lot of these minimalist chalkboards appearing in London. Gone are the days of signs which are expertly drawn works of art. Look at any traditional English pub sign and compare it to the chalkboards outside coffee shops and restaurants, there is no comparison.

However, I quite like these signs. It shows that you can still get information across to the public without spending hours designing elegant works of art. Remember, the purpose of signs and advertising is to communicate, not to be placed in galleries to be stared at while stroking your chin.

For an extreme (yet instantly recognisable) example see this chalkboard depicting Usain Bolt last Saturday.
