Bubbledogs
70 Charlotte Street, Fitzrovia, London, W1T 4QG
This is the first cocktail on opening day from Bubbledogs, the new London ‘champagne and hot dog’ restaurant!
Like many new venues, Bubbledogs has placed equal emphasis on the quality of the drinks, and not just the champagne selection. With two ex-Covent Garden Cocktail Club bartenders, the first page of their drinks menu has selection of five great American-centric cocktails.
This is an interesting little number called “Remember the Maine” which is quite complex and showcases Rittenhouse rye with a hint of absinthe on the finish.
Remember the Maine
Rittenhouse Rye, Italian Vermouth, Cherry Heering, Absinthe“First appearing in Charles H. Baker’s “The Gentleman’s Companion” the name of the drink is in reference to the USS Maine which sank in the Havana harbour due to an inexplicable ammunition explosion in 1898. The flavour of this mxture is equally as potent”

In his book, Charles H. Baker recalls imbibing this in Cuba with an interesting war story.
“REMEMBER the MAINE, a hazy memory of a night in Havana during the unpleasantness of 1933, when each swallow was punctuated with bombs going off on the Prado, or the sound of 3″ shells being fired at the hotel NACIONAL, then haven for certain anti-revolutionary officers.”

Whatever the history, it is a damn fine drink! More on the cocktail menu to come.
