This is a “Mescal Old Fashioned” in progress from the legendary bartender Dick Bradsell resident at El Camion (Soho)
I love the Old Fashioned, it is a classic drink. In fact, it is so classic that it is listed as one of six basic drinks by David Embury in “The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks”. Traditionally made from a bourbon; stirred down with a sugar cube and a dash of bitters; and topped with an orange twist.
However, it also works extremely well with other spirits such as rum, tequila and in this case mescal. The mescal version is slightly more obscure and hits you with a nice slap of smoke. I believe you could easily give this to some whisky drinkers and they would guess it was made with a smokey (possibly Japanese) whisky.
Try it and let me know what you think! (For your info, mine was made with the mescal “Foreverax Jovan”)
