Beef Tomato Rice Chinese Comfort Food… (kinda)… Wong Kei’s Chinatown

Wong Kei’s is arguably the most divisive restuarant in London. Just search for reviews and you will quickly find that it’s the ‘Marmite’ of London eating spots. (You either love it… or hate it).

This is the Beef and Tomato Rice. Personally I thought that this was one of those “Westernised” dishes like “General Tso’s chicken” (invented in America and generally unheard of in China). However just like Chop Suey, it appears that Beef and Tomato rice is actually a Cantonese dish.

Wong Kei is a surreal place. A quick look around the ground floor (reserved for solo diners) shows an eclectic mix of students, businessmen and local workers all getting along. It reminds me of a watering hole in a David Attenborough place. Everyone focusing on replenishing themselves and not bothering each other…

  1. my grandma used to make beef and tomato – basically minced beef, tinned tomatoes, spring onions etc. Like a Chinese bolognaise! I like Wong Kei – especially their beef brisket noodle soup. But then I like Marmite 🙂
