How many burgers can you eat in 60 seconds? Canadian competitive eater, Furious Pete, set a new Guinness World Record of FOUR burgers at Meat Market in Covent Garden yesterday. For dessert he broke another record, “The Fastest Time to Eat 3 Chocolate Eclairs”, smashing the old time by eating all three in just 18.02 seconds!

Competitive eating is an interesting concept, for me food should be enjoyed and savoured. However, it doesn’t stop me watching the ‘athletes’ who love this ‘sport’. Anyone who has watched Adam Richman battle through the infamous Man vs Food challenges, you will know that, competitive eating is focused on three elements, quantity, speed and spiciness.

SCHADENFREUDE ALERT: For anyone interested in spiciness, take a look at the shenanigans from last year’s Rib Man Hot Wings competition or the strangely compelling video of pain!

Meat Market is a burger and hot dog joint from the popular Meat Liquor group. It is hidden away in the mezzanine of Jubilee Market Hall antiques market in Covent Garden which made it a perfect place for competitive eater and bodybyuilder, Pete Czerwinski (better known as Furious Pete), to set a few eating records.

Ironically for a competitive eater, Furious Pete is an ex-anorexic. Prior to this attempt he “held six Guinness World Records in competitive eating, including that for eating a whole raw onion in 43.53 seconds, devouring seventeen bananas in 45 seconds, finishing fifteen hamburgers in 10 minutes, guzzling a 750-millilitre bottle of olive oil in 60 seconds, and consuming 17 Jaffa Cakes in sixty seconds” (Source: Wikipedia)

A team from Guinness World Book of Records was on hand to witness and ensure the attempt was completely legitimate. I had a chat with Craig Glenday, the Editor in Chief of Guinness World Records (successor to Norris McWhirter) and also ex-food critic, He tells me more about the challenger;

Pete is a competitive eating champion, he is very dedicated to his health due to an eating disorder he had as a child. He currently holds 5 Guinness World records for eating including one for eating Jaffa cakes”!

The whole event was recorded as my per the Guinness World Records rules with Craig Glenday and his crew observing every step, even weighing the burgers to ensure that the patties met the minimum 4 Oz weight. Furious Pete demolished three burgers quickly only pausing for a drink of water. The fourth burger was finished with less than than 2 seconds to spare.

After his victory Furious Pete effortlessly followed up by smashing the “Fastest time to eat three chocolate eclairs”. The previous record holder was none other than 80’s children’s TV presenter Keith Chegwin who managed set a benchmark of 1min 03sec… Furious Pete‘s time was just 18.02 seconds. Over three times faster

I caught up with Pete who looked remarkably calm for a guy who just broke some world records and probably ate 3,000 calories in just over 100 seconds.

Q. How confident were you of beating the [required] 3 burgers for the record?
A. “It was no problem I always aimed to have eat four burgers and I did it! ”

Q. How about the eclairs? Was it difficult after the burgers?
A. “The eclairs were a joke… it was so easy”

Q. (From Meat Market) Fancy taking on our “Triple chilli challenge”? Chilli Cheese Fries, Chilli Cheeseburger and a Chilli Dog.
A. I’m not feeling that today, maybe the next time I come to London!

Q. What’s your next challenge?
A. The fastest time to eat a piece of toast, but no water is allowed! It’s not as easy as it sounds.

Unfortunately an attempt for a third World record involving sugared donuts was foiled by a Krispy Kreme employee who inadvertently supplied the wrong doughnuts. However, two World Records in one day is enough for anyone to digest in one day. Well done Furious Pete, let me know when you’re back to do more challenges!
