World Class™ 2014 House
33 Fitzroy Square, Fitzrovia, W1T 6EU (map)
Big fan of spirits and cocktails? If so, get yourself down to World Class House in Fitzrovia near Warren Street Station. Some of the best bartenders in the world will be on hand to give you an spirits and cocktail experience.
The World Class 50 is the world’s largest mixology competition. Now in its fifth year and in a change to previous years, the public will be allowed access to ‘masterclasses and cocktail themed events’. This Worldwide annual quest to find “the most innovative and talented bartenders from across the globe” culminates this week in London.
“World Class is a true celebration of the world’s best bartenders and fine-drinking experiences. From small beginnings in London, to international hot spots in Athens, New Delhi, Rio de Janeiro and the high seas of the Mediterranean; this year, we are proud to see World Class return to Great Britain, paying homage to its origins and showcasing its evolution into the world’s leading bartender event. Come July 2014, our guests will experience the best of Scotland and our Scotch whisky portfolio and will then be taken on-board the luxurious World Class Express to London. Arriving into St Pancras International and capturing the spirit of the environment to introduce fresh influences and inspiration, our bartenders will take over a platform to compete in World Class Live – a once-in-a-lifetime experiential challenge in front of consumers and luxury travellers.”
Matteo Fantacchiotti, Global Commercial Director, Diageo Reserve
This event is run by the UK based spirits powerhouse Diagio. Their collection of brands include the world’s bestselling brands like Smirnoff, Cîroc Vodka and Tanqueray Gin. Needless to say, the Diageo Reserve World Class team have filled every corner of the large Grade I listed town house will activities and bars.
FUN THINGS TO SEEK OUT
- Gin Dispensing Cat
Head to the narrow corridor below street level, outside the Don Julio Tequila Bar in the basement. There is a cat’s head embedded in the wall with a coin slot. Feed the cat a coin and it will reward you with a cocktail!
- Haig Club Whisky Bar
This is an confusing collaboration between Diageo, footballer David Beckham and Simon Fuller, the creator of the ‘Pop Idol’ franchise. It is currently selling exclusively in Selfridges for £45 but is available for tasting at the Haig Club Bar on the top floor. Definitely worth trying, it has no age statement, but it is one of the few single grain whiskies on the market.
- Ron Zacapa (Blind Folded) Experience
The Ron Zacapa rum experience attempts starts with all participants donning a blindfold before being lead through a journey of Zacapa Rum production and their use of virgin sugar cane juice rather than traditional molasses. I won’t spoil the details but chocolate is involved.
- Johnnie Walker Blue Screening Room
One of the world’s best known premium blended whiskies, Johnny Walker have constructed a screening room to showcase their new video starring Jude Law. Unfortunately the details are embargoed until Wednesday for the grand unveiling to the public. During the screening you will get plenty of Johnny Walker Blue to sip in generously sized cinema seating. They will also be unveiling a new nosing kit to help newer whisky drinkers pick out the characteristic flavour notes in Johnny Walker Blue.
