UPDATE (11h20 08-Mar-2014): Tommi’s Burger Joint on Kings Road will soft launch today from 14h00… a few hours earlier than expected.

Tommi’s Burger Joint follow up their immense success in Marylebone with a second site on the Kings Road. Can the Icelandic Burger men repeat their whopping popularity with the well heeled residents of Chelsea?

Tommi’s Burger Joint opened it’s first UK branch just 18 months ago in Aug 2012. Unknown outside their native Iceland it was the first foray abroad for Tommi Tómasson’s burger shack. They quickly gathered a loyal local following in their original short lease Marylebone site with the formula of a simple good burger with quality meat from West London butcher, H.G. Walter.

When their first site in Marylebone Lane was demolished they had a temporary hiatus before reopening 5 minutes away on the corner of Marylebone High Street and Thayer street.

Fast forward to March and the Tommi’s team are about to open their second venue today, but this time on the Kings Road. They replace Brooklyn Bite which in turn replaced the perplexing sandwich shop “Napket” who proudly displayed the words “snob food” in the window.

This little section of Kings Road between Battersea Bridge Road and Oakley Street has been evolving rapidly. Several years ago it was best known as the home of “The Bluebird” by Terrence Conran (now D&D) and “The Big Easy” American Crabshack (who are imminently opening a second branch in Covent Garden). Now there is a Busaba Eathai, the fantastic Kurobuta Japanese popup and rumours of more venues looking at units in the area.

Who are H.G. Walter?

H.G. Walter are a West London butcher established in 1972 and appear to be a popular with multiple London’s burger venues. Aside from Tommi’s Burger Joint in Marylebone (and from today, Kings Road) they also supply the popular Patty & Bun Joe (who will also be opening a new site soon), Boom Burger the recently opened ‘Jamaican flavours’ burger venue in Notting Hill and another newcomer, Burger Pit in The City near The Gherkin).

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Oodles of extraction...

Sauces galore... including Stokes - "Bloody Mary" Ketchup?

This is a venue is decent size with a ground floor and basement area. I’m told by the team there is seating for approximately 50. There are 6 window ‘people watching’ seats facing Kings Road, a mixture of tables for 2 and 4 bolted on the left side wall and tables for 4 on the right. Downstairs holds 4 tables for 4 plus two tables of 5 in a banquette arrangement.

They seem to have gone crazy with hard-core ventilation. There is a massive double vent coming running the length of the venue. I couldn’t detect a whiff of burger even when I was stood next to the open kitchen. Hopefully this means no risk of you wafting burger aromas around at your next destination!

As per their first venue, there are sauces galore and they went out to buy some more while I was visiting!

OPENING DETAILS: The Tommi’s team tell me they are due to open today (Sat 08 Mar, 2014). They didn’t tell me an exact time but their twitter feed says ‘around 5pm’. Do check with them before travelling as these timings can slip!
